Sou Brette’s newest collection Unknown Waters is inspired by the 1953 Russian film Sadko (released in the United States with a script adapted by the young Francis Ford Coppola) and the work of a realist painter, Ilya Repin, titled “Sadko in The Underwater Kingdom”.

The story of Sadko is based on a Russian mythology, about a musician and traveller, who travel to the sea and the underwater kingdom to seek and bring happiness to the people in his city.

There’s nothing like a day in a market. Crossing the streets of Trusmi, hopping from one batik house to another. Strolling down Pasar Klewer, witnessing a trade that takes place. Taking a becak ride (oh how we love having the wind on our faces..) through the narrow streets of Jogja to our dear Bu Dalmi’s workshop.

There’s nothing like a heart that pounds when you see high piles of batik full of magical creatures; birds, fishes, flowers. Nothing like the sweat and thirst that comes afterwards. Or the urge to start sketching, mixing, and clashing fabrics to make something. Something people would notice the second they glance at it.

We don’t do seasons.
